Longfellow Bridge - Weekend & Week Ahead Update for July 29th

Weekend and nightly closure: The Longfellow Bridge will be closed to all motor vehicle traffic from 11 PM on Friday 7/29 to 5 AM on Monday 8/1.  Bike and pedestrian access will be maintained, and there is no impact to Red Line service. This same closure (11 PM to 5 AM, motor vehicles only) will occur each night next week as well (Mon-Fri).

Photo by Todd GlickmanTraffic Shift: Following the rearrangement of Red Line tracks earlier this month, another major milestone is about to occur, this time for vehicular traffic. Starting Monday 8/1, all motor vehicles will shift to the upstream (normally Boston-bound) side of the bridge.  This will mark the first time drivers will be using a rebuilt section of the bridge.  There are no changes to the overall detour plan (all traffic will be Cambridge-to-Boston only), but the crossover on the Cambridge side will no longer be needed.  Please watch traffic patterns carefully when using the bridge next week!

For more information on the Longfellow Bridge rehabilitation and detour routes, please visit MassDOT's project page.

Weekend (and Week Ahead) Construction Notes - July 22nd

There's a lot of closures, bus replacements, and other going on this weekend and next week.  Here's what impacts Cambridge:

1.  Longfellow Bridge:  This weekend will see a motor vehicle closure from 11:00 PM tonight (Fri 7/22) to 4:00 PM tomorrow (Sat 7/23).  During this time, only motor vehicles will be barred - Red Line, bike, and pedestrian access maintained.

Next week, the bridge will also close to motor vehicles only from 11:00 PM to 5:00 AM nightly, Sunday-Friday, 7/24-7/29.

More info from MassDOT here.

2. A contractor will be resurfacing First Street in East Cambridge next week, Monday 7/25 to Wednesday 7/27.  Work will be concentrated on the northbound side of the street, as remediation for the Eversource utility work done on the street over the last year.  Work may extend into Thursday in the event of rain (they can't pave if it's raining!). For info, visit Cambridge DPW.

Note: EZRide Shuttle will be impacted by this, but we will attempt to operate on route as much as possible.  At times shuttles may be diverted to Second Street - please check NextBus alert messages and/or Twitter for updates!

Moving a little further afield, there's a couple bus replacements in store this weekend on the MBTA:

1. Red Line - full closure with buses replacing trains between Quincy Center and Braintree.  Saturday 7/23 and Sunday 7/24, all day, both days.  This will also repeat the weekend of 8/6-8/7.  See T Alerts.

2. Lowell Line (Commuter Rail) - Shuttle buses will replace trains between Wilmington and Lowell Stations this Saturday and Sunday, 7/23 and 7/24.  See commuter rail updates for more info on replacement shuttles.

Longfellow News: Closures nightly, big shift coming August 1

Two items of note today from MassDOT's Longfellow Bridge reconstruction:

1.  All week (Mon 7/18 to Fri 7/22), the bridge will close to motor vehicles from 11 PM to 5 AM.  During this time, bike and pedestrian access will be maintained, and Red Line service will operate on normal schedules. Only motor vehicle access will be restricted.

2. In bigger news, on or about August 1, the one-way motor vehicle traffic will shift from the current downstream side of the bridge, to the rebuilt upstream side.  This will mean the end of the "crossover" moves on either end of the bridge to get cars and trucks onto the normally Cambridge-bound side of the bridge.  This change will allow for construction to shift into Phase 4, the reconstruction of the bridge structure under the Red Line outbound track.  (Note that the Red Line is currently shifted "upstream" to allow this to happen.

Once the outbound Red Line track area is rebuilt, the project will be able to advance to its last major phase, the reconstruction of the downstream Cambridge-bound roadway.

For Phase 4, the current bicycle (use upstream side) and pedestrian (use downstream side) routes will remain in place.  Look for shifts to these when Phase 5 begins.  If you're a fan of construction diagrams, MassDOT a cross-section breakdown of how this all fits together.

For full details, as always, see the MassDOT project site.

Main Street - Kendall Square EZRide Stop moves 7/11

Starting Monday, July 11th, the Kendall Square stop will move west. All shuttles (both directions, all day) will now stop in front of the MIT Coop (325 Main Street).  This is where the Morning Outbound/Evening Inbound shuttle stop was located prior to Main Street construction.

Please note - there are NO CHANGES to the detour at this time, only the location of the Kendall stop is changing. For more info on the current detour plan, please see our blog post here.

We expect the MIT Student Routes (Morning Inbound, Midday & Evening Outbound) to remain on detour through the end of July.  Additional construction work will be blocking the bus stop on the eastbound side over the next few weeks before the Main Street project concludes.

Charles River TMA and EZRide Shuttle would like to thank our riders for their patience during the last two years of construction in Kendall Square!
